Neeranchal National Watershed Project(NNWP)

Background

World Bank assisted 'Neeranchal National Watershed Management Project' is being implemented from 2015-16 in nine States. The Project aims to support erstwhile lntegrated Watershed Management Project (IWMP) now Watershed Development Component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchyee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY) through technical assistance. This will improve incremental conservation outcomes and agricultural yields for communities in selected sites, and adoption of more effective processes and technologies into the broader IWMP in participating States. Neeranchal Project will be implemented in a phased sequence. ln the first operation phase the project will be initiated in 05 sub-watersheds (of approximately 5000 ha each) in each of two focal districts or 10 in each State. ln the second phase the lessons learned and approaches would be adopted in another 20 sub-watersheds in each district or 40 in each State. The project will be implemented from 2016-2017 to 2021-2022.

Aims & Objective

The Project Development Objective of Neeranchal Project is to support the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) in general and specifically the watershed Component to improve incremental conservation outcomes and ageicultural yields for communities in selected sites, and adoption of new processes and technologies into the broader programme in participating project States.
While Neeranchal will focus effort on 18 selected districts in 9 project states, the experiences gained and innovation developed will feed into the implementation of the WC-PMKSY in the 29 States of the country where PMKSY is being implementation. Neeranchal focus states cover approximately 60 percent of area under WC-PMKSY.
As a key implementation partner, the role of NIH is to
  • Develop and pilot a DSS-H to implement the Watershed Component of PMKSY at landscape, expanded sub-watershed and micro-watershed levels in selected project areas in 9 States.
  • Develop tools and systems to help all stakeholders to make better water management decisions during watershed planning and post implementation.
  • Technical backstopping to States for urban watershed management.
  • Conduct capacity building programs for the stakeholders.
The ultimate beneficiaries of the project are small and marginal farmers, including women, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) involved in watershed activities and agriculture, and asset-less persons.
